John Berry
John disappointed his parents when forsaking a place to read theology at Oxford in favour of a life in horse racing. Having grown up surrounded by horses at his family's farm in the Scottish Borders, he enjoyed a brief stint riding as an amateur over jumps. This was followed by time spent working for National Hunt trainer Andy Turnell near Marlborough, then several years riding track work in Victoria, Australia. Arriving in Newmarket, he worked at Woodditton Stud and as pupil assistant to Luca Cumani before setting up as a trainer in his own right in 1995. John is also a longstanding columnist for Australian racing weekly Winning Post, a contributor to Thoroughbred Daily News, and has often been called upon as a pundit on At The Races. He is a small breeder, with his most notable success coming with his cherished Roy Rocket (pictured), a nine-time winner at Brighton and ROA Flat Special Achievement Award winner. John is a Newmarket councillor and served as the town's mayor in 2015/'16.
Jana Trnakova
A native of the Czech Republic, Jana rode winners in her home country before coming to Newmarket and taking a job with Clive Brittain. During her time at Carlburg Stables, she was the regular rider of dual Group 1 winner Rizeena. Jana came to work at Beverley House Stables on Clive's retirement in 2015 and has been with us ever since. She is looking forward to the offspring of her beloved Hope Is High coming into training here over the next few years.
Abbie Bunten
Abbie is another longstanding member of the Beverley House Stables team. Born and bred in Newmarket, she first started coming in to help out when still at school and later joined full time, working in the yard and travelling many of the horses to the races.
Ivona Slachtova
Also from the Czech Republic, Ivona has been with us since 2017, having previously worked for John Gosden. She is a lovely rider who struck up a good partnership with our much-missed Kryptos.
Stephen McCormick
A great friend and visitor to the yard every Saturday who helps with all manner of things and is a co-owner of Merrijig.
Emma Berry
General dogsbody; in charge of sausage sandwiches.
Away from Beverley House Stables, Emma is the European and international editor of TDN and editor of Bloodstock Notebook. She sits on the BHA's Flat Pattern Committee, is a trustee of British EBF and a British Horseracing Hall of Fame panellist.
Yard security
Morston, Gus and Blakeney.
